How to make a demo video on Windows
Plan the one thing viewers should learn, tidy your screen, record in short takes with a screen recorder that zooms in on your clicks, cut the waiting, and export in 1080p or higher.
1. Decide what the video is for
A good demo teaches one thing. Write it down in one sentence before you record, for example “how to share a report with a client”. Everything that doesn’t help with that sentence stays out.
Then list the steps in order, as short notes, not a script to read out:
- Open the report
- Click Share report
- Copy the link
- Show what the client sees
A list like this keeps you from wandering, and it doubles as the outline if you add chapters later.
2. Get your screen ready
Viewers notice clutter, notifications and personal details more than you do.
- Turn on Do not disturb in the notification centre so no messages pop up mid-take.
- Close what you don’t need, and hide desktop icons if the desktop will be visible (right-click the desktop › View › Show desktop icons).
- Use demo data. Sample customers and a test account look better than your real inbox, and leak nothing.
- Make text bigger. In a browser, zoom to 110–125% with Ctrl +. In Windows, Settings › System › Display › Scale at 125% or more helps on a large monitor.
- Size the window. A browser window around 1600 × 1000 pixels gives a crisp 16:10 recording without stretching across an ultra-wide screen.
3. Record in short takes
One long take means one mistake ruins all of it. Record each step from your list as its own short recording; it’s easier to redo a 20-second take than a 5-minute one.
With screenrecordwindows.com, a screen recorder for Windows made for this kind of video:
- Press Alt R to open the recording bar.
- Choose Window to record just your app, or Area to drag a box. For browser recordings, the tabs and address bar can be left out automatically.
- Turn on your microphone, and the camera if you want to appear in the video.
- Click Record and use the three-second countdown to put your hand on the mouse.
Move the mouse calmly, pause for a beat after each click, and say what you’re doing as you do it.
4. Let the zooms do the explaining
At full-screen size, a button is a few pixels wide on a phone or a small video player. Zooming in on the action is what makes a screen recording watchable.
screenrecordwindows.com zooms in automatically: it eases in just before each click, frames the field while you type, and pulls back when you move on. Each zoom is a block on the timeline, so you can move it, change how far it goes in, or delete it.
For the one click that really matters, right-click it on the timeline and choose Focus clickpoint. The rest of the screen dims for a moment, and time can freeze on the click while the camera keeps moving, so nobody misses it.
5. Cut the waiting
Loading spinners, page loads and pauses while you think add up fast. Trim them, or speed them up:
- Split and trim on the timeline to remove mistakes and dead time.
- Speed up slow parts to 2× or 4×. screenrecordwindows.com spots loading screens and pauses for you and offers them at 4× with one click.
6. Make it look finished
Small touches make a recording look like a product video rather than a screen grab:
- A background and padding around the recording, with rounded corners and a soft shadow.
- A smooth cursor with a subtle click effect, in a size that’s easy to follow.
- Your camera, in a bubble or beside the screen, if a face helps the viewer trust what they’re seeing. See how to record your screen and webcam at the same time.
- A 3D device for a launch or a landing page: the recording plays on a MacBook or iPhone with camera moves that follow your cursor.
7. Check for private details
Before you export, scrub through and look for email addresses, names, API keys and card numbers. screenrecordwindows.com scans each recording on your PC and blurs those details for you; draw your own blur boxes for anything else it should hide.
8. Export in the right size
| Where it’s going | Shape | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Your website, YouTube, docs | 16:9 | 1080p or 1440p, 60 fps (more on YouTube quality) |
| TikTok, Reels, YouTube Shorts | 9:16 | 1080p |
| LinkedIn, Instagram feed | 1:1 or 4:5 | 1080p |
| A README or a support reply | GIF | Short loop, under 15 seconds |
You can change the shape after recording, and the layout re-arranges itself: on a tall 9:16 video, a wide recording sits on a background with your camera stacked underneath, or fills the frame and follows the action.

Questions
How long should a demo video be?
As short as the task allows. Most product demos and how-to videos work best between one and three minutes. If it runs longer, split it into several videos, one task each.
What resolution should I export a demo video in?
1080p is the safe choice for websites, YouTube and documentation. Use 1440p or 4K if viewers will watch full screen on large monitors, and 60 frames per second so scrolling and cursor movement look smooth.
What is the best format for a demo video on social media?
9:16 (vertical) for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, 1:1 or 4:5 for LinkedIn and Instagram feeds, and 16:9 for YouTube and your website. screenrecordwindows.com exports all of them from the same recording.
Do I need to edit a demo video?
A raw screen recording is hard to follow, because the text is small and the pointer gets lost. At minimum, zoom in on the important parts and cut the waiting. screenrecordwindows.com does both for you as you record.
